About Dr. Barnhart

Dr. Joe Barnhart (1920-1993) spent his formative years in Beeville, Texas. His career took him to Houston, where he worked for 35 years as an orthopedic surgeon. He was the Chief of Orthopedics at St. Luke’s Hospital for 17 years, and later held that title at Texas Children’s Hospital. Baylor College of Medicine recognized Barnhart’s legacy by naming the orthopedic department in his honor: The Joseph Barnhart Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

Always interested in supporting education and the arts, Dr. Barnhart was active in the Beeville community through the years. In 1988, he established the Joe Barnhart Foundation and in 1992 was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Beeville Chamber of Commerce.

Today, his legacy is reflected in the success of many. The programs created and managed by the Foundation continue to create new opportunities for the people of Beeville and the surrounding areas. Today the Foundation contributes more than $2 million annually to Beeville and Bee County, Texas.
